No headless Santa’s

As I was setting up the tree this year at our house, I came across a few of the exclusive “cast member only” Christmas Ornaments I received when I was a leader at Walt Disney World. They certainly brought back memories.

One of those memories is the utter amazement that the cast members could transform the Magic Kingdom from Halloween to Christmas overnight.

Talk about MAGIC! A guest could leave the “Halloween” Magic Kingdom at 10:00 pm on Wednesday and return to the park at 8:00 am Thursday and enter the “Christmas” Magic Kingdom.

This is no Two Turtle Doves or Ten Lords a Leapin’! Nope, Disney has a year round crew, working in a building larger than a football field, ensuring that holiday decorations are ready for the next season.

  • A couple Hundred Thousand of Poinsettias
  • Miles of lights
  • Thousands of wreaths
  • And almost a thousand Christmas Trees.

And you think you have a tough time decorating!

As I have spoken about before, Disney has a PROCESS for everything!

  • Change a flat tire? Yep, a process.
  • Clear dishes from a dirty table? Yep, a process.
  • Change Halloween to Christmas overnight? Yep, a process.

Halloween decorations come down. They are inventoried, inspected, repaired and stored for next year. They look at what worked and what didn’t. What could they have done differently? What can they do next year to PLUS the show.

Christmas goes up. All those decoration have been through a process. And that process ensures that guests will not be disappointed when they arrive and see lights burned out, bent ribbons or headless Santa Clauses.

And Disney does this with every change in decorations all across the property. The only way they can get all of this done is through a process (or more correctly, many of them).

That is how Disney creates the MAGIC! Process!

What does this have to do with your business?

EVERYTHING!

Do you have a process, documented of course, for everything that happens in your company? Do you review the processes? Make corrections? PLUS them?

Or do you and your employees just run around willy-nilly everyday making it up as you go along?

You need to have a documented (yep, it needs to be written down) process for everything. You must be relentless and dogmatic about them. You must ensure your employees adhere to them and have an opportunity to improve them.

In the first quarter of 2020, I will be announcing an opportunity for you to have me be your personal “Client / Patient Service Coach”. And process is one of the things we will be covering.
