Over a century ago, Russell Conwell was one of the original motivational speakers.

His most famous lecture, one he delivered more than 6000 times, was Acres of Diamonds—a true story he heard while traveling through Iraq.

If the title sounds familiar it’s because “the Dean of Personal Development” Earl Nightingale adopted Conwell’s story into his teachings.

Acres of Diamonds is about a wealthy man named Ali Hafed who was content until a priest told him about diamonds.

After Ali heard how much diamonds were worth, all he could think of was finding diamonds. This made him a discontented man because he was frustrated with what he had, fearing that he was poor. He sold his farm. Left his family. And wandered all over in search of diamonds. Eventually, completely broke with his health failing him, he walked into a river and drowned.

Meanwhile, one day the man who had bought Ali Hafed’s farm was crossing a stream on the property when a bright flash from the stream caught his eye. Bending down, he found a good size stone and admiring it, brought it home and put it on his fireplace mantel as an interesting curiosity.

Several weeks later, a visitor picked up the stone and closely examined it. He asked the farmer if he knew what he’d found. When the farmer told him no, the visitor explained to him that it was one of the largest diamonds he’d ever seen! The farmer had trouble believing this as his creek was full of such stones, not as large, but generously sprinkled throughout the creek bottom. It turned out that the farm Ali Hafed had sold to go in search of diamonds was one of the most productive diamond mines on the continent.

The point is often we dream of fortunes to be made elsewhere, when instead we should be open to the opportunities that are right under our feet.
